Hikari is a transfer student from Nagoya, Japan. She comes from a very wealthy family who runs a franchise of hospital networks in Japan. She started going to school in America as a transfer student in her high school years in order to expand her horizons and explore the world. She was offered housing by none other than Mai who was curious about sharing her trailer home with an exchange student. Despite their vast differences, the two became friends and she often relies on Mai to help her with academics. Hikari is snobbish and is the first to complain if something isn't up to her standards. She hasn't had much luck trying to find a boyfriend because of this. Her plan in life is to work her way up the medical school system in the US and help expand her family name in the United States. But of course, that was side tracked when Mai introduced her to VR gaming and forced her to play Mil-Sim Story with her where her nursing aspirations will come into fruition as the medic class.
The AN-94 (Avtomat Nikonova model of 1994), which is also named after the Siberian city of Abakan, is an experimental assault rifle developed in the 90s as potential replacement for the AK-74 which was the standard issue rifle of the Russian Armed Forces at the time. It was adopted for service to a very very limited extent with special forces and never saw widespread use as it was originally intended. One of the many reasons is due to its incredibly complex mechanism which allows the rifle to fire a “hyper burst” of two rounds at a whopping 1800 rounds/minute before the shooter could even feel the recoil. The internals of the rifle were described as too complex for the average conscript to maintain and figure out. In many ways, the AN-94 is analogous to the H&K G11 and other western burst fire prototypes and concepts in the late 80s and early 90s albeit executed in a more conventional manner. The AN-94 uses AK-74 magazines but they are fed at a canted angle which could seriously irritate anyone with OCD. It uses a 5.45x39 cartridge just like the AK-74 so recoil is already very manageable but the two round “hyper burst” ensures multiple hits with nearly precise accuracy compared to using full-auto which the AN-94 also has with a 600 round/minute rate of fire. Despite the original idea behind the AN-94, this is not a beginner’s assault rifle and only those with a high technical and mechanical understanding of firearm operations can be seen with the AN-94 in Mil-Sim Story. Even then, it’s not a very popular rifle as jams or malfunctions in the field can make the rifle a burden if not impossible to get running again without doing some serious gunsmithing work. It’s also one of the most expensive rifles in Mil-Sim Story, just like it’s real life counterpart so seeing them in the hands of other players is a rarity.
Hikari picked the AN-94 as her choice of rifle, kind of as a status symbol despite knowing absolutely nothing about firearms to begin with. She’ll have to adapt and learn her rifle as the story progresses and she has to take extra care to keep the elements away from the AN-94’s delicate mechanism. When all is well, the AN-94 has a gentle recoil impulse even with the “hyper burst” and Hikari is able to make accurate and precise hits compared to her peers despite being a complete novice. Since the AN-94 is partially (and I do mean partially as the AN-94 is a completely different beast compared to the AK-74), compatible with AK-74 accessories, Hikari can mount optics, lights, lasers, and even a suppressor to her rifle. She likes the EOTECH XPS series of holographic sights which gives her superior sighting capabilities compared to the iron sights on her rifle. She can also mount flashlights or a L3Harris PEQ-15 laser aiming pointer and illuminator for use with night vision goggles.
The SIG P320 is a very controversial handgun in the civilian, law, and military scene which was introduced in 2014. It is somewhat based on the design of the double action hammer operated P250, the P320 was designed to be modular, ambidextrous, and uses a striker fire mechanism for a “better” trigger pull. The fire control group is a single chassis unit which could easily be swapped among different frames. There is no safety on the base model of the P320 and the gun was known to have accidental discharges with civilians, soldiers, and law enforcement agencies. Many of the parts are manufactured in different countries and the milled parts were known to have quality control issues which could be the cause for many of these discharges. Top it off with SIG Sauer’s unethical business practices and government contracts and you have a pistol with more drama and shots fired unintentionally than the entire Global War on Terror ever produced. Despite this, the P320 is considered a popular handgun in the US and is the standard issue pistol for the US Army and the Marines (M17 and M18 respectively) but is considered a liability that desperately needs modifications and expertises in firearms to be considered viable in the real world.
In Mil-Sim Story, the P320 is a common sidearm that generally does not have the infamous quality control issues of the real deal but still lack of a trigger and/or frame safety has resulted in many players accidentally causing a discharge with their P320 to the point where it has become a meme in the game. Aftermarket fire control units and frames can be purchased in-game including some frame and trigger safety mods. Caution must be taken especially when holstering as the trigger is wide enough to be snagged within the holster. Regardless, Hikari opted for the P320 Spectre Comp to be her sidearm because it’s an expensive configuration which is not even designed for combat use but rather as a race gun. For context, race guns are designed for timed competitive shooting where the shooter will have to place hits on targets in a short amount of time. A game mode simulating this does exist in Mil-Sim Story. Being a competition race gun, the P320 Spectre Comp has several modifications such as a tungsten-infused grip module for added weight, a compensator to reduce recoil even more so, a trigger job, and an optics cut. The pistol is almost laser accurate and has no recoil which please Hikari’s exquisite tastes in addition to the gold accented barrel and engravings apart from shooting better than a stock P320. There is no safety of any kind so Hikari is being on the edge with her choice. She can also fit her P320 into a Flux Raider chassis with some minor modifications to turn her sidearm into a compact PDW (Personal Defense Weapon) which could come in handy when her AN-94 has a severe malfunction.
